Marvel is known worldwide as a publisher of American comic books. The company was originally founded under the name Timely Publications, but changed its name to Atlas comics in the early 1950s. In 1961, the more commonly-known Marvel name came into being. At this time, the company began releasing comics based around the brand’s more commonly known superheroes.

The Fantastic Four

The Fantastic Four came into being in 1961, and were created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist/co-plotter Jack Kirby. Members of the Fantastic Four are:

  • Mister Fantastic – Reed Richards, scientific genius who gains the power to stretch his body into almost any length and shape.
  • Invisible Woman – Susan “Sue” Storm, who can become invisible and learns to project powerful force fields
  • The Human Torch – Johnny Storm, Sue’s younger brother, can produce flames that surround his body and fly.
  • Thing – Ben Grimm, who has stone-like flesh and appearance and superhuman strength. He often refers to himself as a monster after his transformation.

Villians that often face off against the group include Doctor Doom, Galactus, Namor, Silver Surfer, and Skrulls.

Spider Man

Peter Parker is a teenager when he is bitten by a radioactive spider and gains superhuman powers such as strength and agility, as well as a sixth sense for detecting danger. In the comics, he creates devices attached to his wrist to shoot his spider-webs, though movies have depicted him shooting the webs from his own hand.

X-Men

Marvel’s X-Men are some of the most well-known Marvel superheroes. This team of mutant superheroes was assembled by Professior Xavier, a clairvoyant parapalegic who creates a mutant haven and training academy amongst growing anti-mutant sentiment.

Iron Man

Genius engineer Tony Stark becomes Iron Man after suffering a severe chest injury while being kidnapped. Instead of creating the weapon of mass destruction his captors request, Stark creates a powered suit of armor that saves his life and allows him to escape. He later uses the suit to fight crime and protect the world.

Hulk

Sometimes also known as The Incredible Hulk, Bruce Banner gains his unique appearance through a lab accident. His alter-ego is Bruce Banner, a withdrawn and reserved physicist. He transforms into the large, superhumanly strong, green-skinned Hulk whenever he is affected by strong emotions such as anger whether he wants to or not. Hulk has his own personality that is totally separate from Banner, and at times, even hates him.

Thor

Thor is portrayed as the character from Norse mythology, and is a founding member of Marvel’s Avengers. He’s been popular enough to also earn his own film in 2011, and has starred in several of Marvel’s ongoing series and limited series.
